Hardcore Pawn: Detroit Pawn Shop on TruTV

30 Mar

Seth Gold, Les Gold and Ashley Broad (Gold) of the American Jewelry and Loan pawn shop in Detroit, Michigan depicted in Hardcore Pawn on TruTV.

Anyone who has seen Pawn Stars on the History channel, may expect more of the same kind of show, with Hardcore Pawn on TruTV, but they are completely different shows.

While Pawn Stars is more of a laid back show, Hardcore Pawn is more confrontational. While there may be some mild confrontations, on Pawn Stars, they pale in significance to those experienced, by the employees on Hardcore Pawn.

The actual name, of the pawn shop is American Jewelry and Loan. It is located in a neighborhood, that is not that safe. There are security guards nearby in the pawn shop to quell any disturbances that may arise. To show what kind of a neighborhood the show is filmed in, the camera focuses on the Eight Mile road sign.

The owner, Les Gold is a no-nonsense type of guy. He sometimes finds himself, breaking up fights between his son Seth and daughter Ashley. They are both headstrong types, who believe their way is the right way.

The following video shows a man who loses at the casino, pawns some items, then returns to the pawn shop after losing again.

One man in the video claims he was told he was told he could get $255, for the items he was wanting to pawn. The owner tells him he will get the $155 or could go home. The man becomes belligerent and is thrown out of the pawn shop by the security guards.

A lady comes in to pawn her wedding ring, after losing at the casino expecting to get a lot of money  to pawn it. She said her husband give her $300 to pay some bills, but she lost it at the casino. She winds up getting $30 and heads back to the casino.

The next customer brings in a OB-GYN examination table and takes $50 for it. Ashley, the daughter of the owner who made the deal is worried, they won’t be able to resell it. However,  a customer comes in and buys it for $200.

Pawn Stars has been a powerhouse in the ratings for the History channel, drawing over six million viewers an episode. Hardcore Pawn has not done so well, drawing only a little over two million viewers an episode.

While Pawn Stars focuses more on the value of the items brought in to be pawned, Hardcore Pawn features more of what is going on behind the scenes.

The pawn shop management decides to have a raffle in one episode, but it goes terribly wrong, when nobody has a winning number, after calling a bunch of numbers. The crowd becomes upset, but it ends well.

Sure, I think it would be a great show, a better show if there was less of the drama that is going on with Seth and Ashley. Granted Ashely left the business to take care of her family and now has come back from what is portrayed on the show, but Seth sure is showing who is boss and is making his self heard. He thinks he is all that and he knows everything, and maybe he does know the business. I will give him that, but he is very, very rude and disrespectful to his dad and to his sister and it is very inappropriate and is show to the viewers. And it’s just not appealing, we will say that. If he thinks he is getting ratings for his actions or his display of behaviors, he’s NOT. He is arrogant, nasty, vulgar, and downright disrespectful and needs to be told so. I feel sorry for both Les and Ashley a lot of times.

I love the show, but think Seth, needs to shut his mouth.

If all the drama between Seth and Ashley is a ploy to get higher ratings it may backfire. Problem with too many reality shows are that they are not reality because producers like to inject drama when there is no drama. Ratings may actually drop if this goes on much longer between Seth and Ashley.

I think that Ashley is nothing but A cry baby “SPOILED” little baby who needs drama and attention on her at all times. I have to agree that Seth is a smart ass some of the time but for the most part he knows what he’s doing. Let’s put it this way I would much rather have Seth as my boss instead of Ashley, and I think that I speak for most of the staff!!

I think Hardcore Pawn is the best and most exciting of the two pawn store shows. I would truly love to go to that store rather than the one in Las Vegas. Pawn Stars is rather tame compared to Hardcore Pawn!

Pawn Stars and Hardcore Pawn are very different. Pawn Stars doesn’t have so much drama while Hardcore Pawn is full of drama.

Seth is rude and disrespectful to everyone. His know it all attitude gets REAL old. Ashley is no queen in her role playing either. They need to find something else to do on the show and maybe in their life other than fighting.

Gwen, I agree that Seth and Ashley are equally to blame for the animosity between them. Neither one will give an inch, so until they do, the bickering will continue till their dad, ends all the drama for once and for all. Then this is reality TV or rather un-reality TV and the producers may be egging on the drama between Seth and Ashley. Drama means ratings, so it may continue in the future.

This program is the most despicable display of a family obsessed with money grubbing and cheating the black community. What makes it worse, they are doing in when the country is going through the worst financial crisis in 100 years. The are the most racist people on TV and the fact that they have been given a voice by truTV is reprehensible. This is the type of TV show that exacerbates the problems that Blacks have with Jewish people and visa verse. Rather than create this platform for hate and mistrust, perhaps you should just cancel the show and not give the hating and nasty Golds a future forum.

My wife loves this stupid show. The old man has made his money screwing people and the two kids are a couple of spoiled adolescents. If that were my business and my kid came to me and demanded I retire because he knows a better way to run it, three things would happen. 1) He would spend the rest of the day wondering if his jaw is broken or just sprained. 2) He would do that wondering while cleaning out his office. 3) He would be wondering just what it’s going to be like trying to get a job from someone other than family.

The son is by far more childish (and feminine) than the sister but they are both whiney brats.

Angry, I couldn’t agree with you more. The brother and sister fighting gets old in a hurry. This show can’t be reality, because the whole show seems to be geared, on focusing on the fighting between the two siblings and their father. I think they notched up the drama on the show to get higher ratings.

The show has gotten worse as it goes on, since there is less focus on the pawn shop business and more on the family squabbles. I don’t know how they can keep a straight face, since I think the family feud is staged.

      Appreciate your comment.

I really like the show, but the kids can be so chidish. Ashleyis kind of stomach turning with her hateful attitude. Often the look on her face and what comes out of her mouth is ugly. When she asks someone what they want for something and then cops an attitude about it!

I liked the show more before the brother and sister started all the arguing. Ashley does have a bad attitude toward the customers. These people are living in an apparent high crime area and probably need the money very badly, so she should at least treat them with some respect. There are nice ways of saying what they have is not worth much.

this show is heading in the same direction as orange county chopper. maybe my age is showing but if i mouthed off to my father like the two brats do it would have happened once, then i’d be making a dental appointment and then i’d see a proctologist to get his foot out of my ass

I got so tired of all the turmoil between the dad and the two kids, that I stopped watching the show.

Fast forward to August 2013 and the same drama is still going on. I actually have a new found respect for Seth since Les has been recovering from his surgery, but Ashley is still the same condescending, arrogant, and RUDE brat she has always been. I would be so ashamed and embarrassed if she were my daughter, I often wonder what her mother thinks of her behavior….how humiliating for her parents, and to think she’s a MOM!!!! OMG! Anyway Les, hang in there, you’ll always have a successful business, with or without your kids. I don’t think your show will continue because it really is hard to watch Ashley be so rude and mean to your customers, nothing ever changes at American Jewelry.

Debi, Thank you for the update on Hardcore Pawn. It doesn’t look like things have changed much, since when I wrote the original article.
