It doesn’t seem like it has been four years, since Miss Teen USA struggled with an answer, to the question of why one fifth of Americans can’t find United States on a map.
Over 48 million people have viewed this video of Lauren Caitlin Upton answering a question as part of the 2007 Miss Teen USA competition.
Even though her response is funny, I can’t help but feel sorry for her as she is clearly nervous, and is struggling to find the right words to give her answer.
If she had been judged solely by beauty, she probably would have won the pageant, but no they had to throw in questioning as part of the pageant.
Here is her response in text form from Wikipedia.com:
“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some . . . people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over HERE in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children”.
She later appeared on Amazing Race in which she finished third.
