Dick Clark 1929-2012
Dick Clark became the host of American Bandstand in 1956, the year that rock and roll music took over the music world, so he was a big part of the early days of rock and roll.
I can remember coming home from high school and watching American Bandstand in the 50′s and 60′s. Our high school (Pineville High in Pineville, Louisiana) had a band named the The Capris who would have one of their records rated on the show. The kids dancing at that show rated their record higher than a Rolling Stones record. You can imagine how excited the band was to receive national exposure, that American Bandstand and Dick Clark made possible.American Bandstand was first telecast on a local Philadelphia television station in 1952. Sam Horn who was the host before Clark, was fired for drunken driving, opening the way for Clark to become the host and who would host the show till 1989. 33 years had passed since he took over the show in 1956 and by 1989 MTV was the rage of the music world.
