I love that song. If you saw the memorial service of Michael Jackson, his brother sang it through his tears. It is one that brings back such touching memories. My dad used this song, almost as a plea for help when he was troubled, even prayerfully when my sister who was older than me died as a teen. I can’t help but shed tears when I hear it, as that was really bad times for my family. Jimmie Davis helped dad cope through this trial.
I try to heed the words when I am troubled. SMILE EVEN THOUGH YOUR HEART IS BREAKING.
Thank you for this bitter sweet memory. Your blogs not only entertain, but touch ones heart. I tried to keep this song in mind when I suffered the greatest loss of my life.
I will never forget Jermaine Jackson singing Smile at the funeral. That and Michael’s daughter telling how much she loved her father is what I will always remember the most from the funeral.
Smile has simple yet powerful lyrics and you have seen more than your share of tragedy. I have been fortunate to have lost only one from our immediate family when my mom died in 1998 at the age of 80. My baby sister is the only one not in their 60′s since she is 52 among the kids.
The video of Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard really touched my heart. Wished they had printed on the words of the song on the screen to make it even more powerful film.
